I am looking to buy a set of irons. currently playing a set of titleist 735 cm and love them. Just want to buy another set. also have a blended set of ping I5s and S 59s. I have swingspeed of approx 106 with driver and 5 handicap ...50 years old

have my eye on a set of either titleist zb, AP 2s or Mizuno MP57

Not A bad ball striker and carry 5 iron about 185 and pw 135

I am looking for a set of irons that provide forgiveness in long iron but ability to control trajectory and distance with short irons.

what iron would you recommend of these 3 (please keep feedback restricted to these 3)

would appreciate any and all feedback

out of those irons, and with your requirements, the obvious choice would be the mp-57.
the zb's will be the least forgiving, but will provide good trajectory control.
the ap2's will be the most forgiving, but do have a tendency to give a high ball flight in all irons(those 2 reasons are why i like and use them).
mp-57's will not be as forgiving as the ap2's(for me they were nowhere close in this category), but shouldn't be as demanding to hit as the zb's. however, they'll give you very good trajectory control while retaining that nice, classic forged feel.

The ZM's are very comparable to the 735cm's but more forgiving in the long irons. I did not like the Ap2's at all. I thought they had too much bounce and ballflight was way to high. The Mizzy's are a good middle ground.

I own the 57s and really like the look and feel. Plently of height and moderate forgiveness from the mizzy. The Ap2s were my first choice and felt smoother but I think the PX shafts in the Ap2s were the reason. Final decision was made based on the look of the 57s over the AP2s. IMO, the MP 58 and the AP2 are brothers from a different mother. Either way, you can't go wrong.

I have the AP2's and don't Particularly like them. The offset is a bit much for my liking, and they seem to sit a bit closed because of it, unless my hands are uncomfortably forward. They seem to hit everything high, and they seem to be sole-heavy. For most people, though, they have a very nice look.

I demoed the MP57's just last week, and wasn't particulary impressed with them, either. The MP 62's and their newest blades (68's?) were the best performing and feeling irons in their line-up...imo

I don't know much about the other titleist's you mentioned, but I can almost guarantee they will flight the ball better than either of the others.

My USGA index is 1.6. I carry a 5-iron 185. Driver SS is just above 105. I play Ping G10 driver, 1H, 3H, Titleist AP2 irons 4-PW, and 50/54/60 Cleveland Wedge combo.

I will likely be switching irons, and possibly my wedge configuration (thinking about 4-GW, 56, 60).

Over all its hard to go wrong with either Titleist or Mizuno. Personally, I'm in the Mizuno camp b/c of the quality and feel. I'd suggest MP 60's, they are stupid easy to hit and workable.

My ss is 107 mph, 6i ss 86 mph, I love my long irons, my hc bounces between 9-11, (b/c of putting) and I'm 61.

Lum:

I'd consider the MP62 short/mid irons, and the MP52's in long irons instead of the MP57s....based on forgiveness and feel. The MP57s don't feel as solid as other MP irons.

To be honest the long irons in the MP62 are fairly forgiving...I just added a 4 iron last year - I am 1 club shorter than you throughout the set.

I really liked the MP62's when I demoed them. Better than all other MP offerings. The MP 68 blade was also very solid.

I no longer carry a 3-iron. I've always been able to hit a 4-iron (on down) pretty well, and given my demo experience, I think the MP 62's were reasonably forgiving. Never tried the MP 60's, though a friend of mine played them for a couple of years, and I they worked pretty well for him (in the 10hcp range)!

Sorry for the late response but having just gotten rid of a set of ZB's that I played for 2 years I would recommend the AP2's. I just did an extensive demo and they performed much better than my ZB's and was more forgiving than the MP57. I'm in a similar place as you that I want to get good shotmaking out of my shorter irons and more forgiveness out of the longer irons. The AP2 fits the bill. My ss numbers are about the same as you maybe a little higher and my HCP is +.1 so I can relate to what you are looking for.
The ZB's we nice but not very forgiving so the tradeoff was really not worth it.
I'm hunting for a set of AP2's now on ebay - I don't want to shell out the $999 retailers are asking for these days.

I have not hit the ZBs, but based on the design, they would be the least forgivng, and I have seen numerious posts on other golf forums where most everyone seems to like the '10 Titleist CBs better.

I have only hit the AP2s in the Proj X standard shafts. I felt I hit them too high. Trajectory control was a bit of challenge. I never have liked the Proj X shafts, would be interested in trying the '10 models with Dynamic Golds, but am not will to part with a grand for them.

I bought the MP57s a month ago on a whim ($350 closeout, too good to pass up). I have only played a couple of rounds with them, but find them a nice combo of feel, forgiveness and playablity. The adjustment period was quick, and I was able to dial them in pretty easily. I replaced the 3 iron with an MP Fli-Hi, which I found for $40, again I couldn't resist. The yardage and direction off the Fli-Hi is more consistant than the 3 iron, although the MP long irons were pretty easy to hit, given their somewhat compact size.

I have had the MP-57, AP2 and the 735CM irons that have been mentioned. I really think the MP-57 irons lack a little of the Mizuno feel being that they are a full cavity back. Also, the MP-57's to me had a little to much offset. I hit them a mile and they look good but behind the ball they just did not seem as appealing as other irons. I had a real brief encounter with the AP2's and I was not impressed at all with them. They seemed a little bulky on the topline and sole. I had the 735CM's for 2 years and liked the combo set alot, but I just decided to move onto a full blade set. I currently play MP-32's and carry a 1.8 handicap and have about the same swing speeds and carry distances you mention on average. If I had to make the decision on what to get and was willing to spend the money on a new set I would look into the MP58-Mp-68 or the new Titleist 710 CB and the Titleist MB. Those 4 models seem to look great and they feel good also. I hit all of them already, but since my MP-32's are new I will not be buying any for awhile.

Thanks
