Full Version: Mizuno MX-23 upgrade?

I don't know if there's a newer/better game improvement club out there but being left handed makes it difficult to demo. Below are some of my considerations or should I just stay with what I have? I play to a 12 hdcp and am using Rifle 5.0 flighted shafts. If I change heads I would probably opt for a lighter shaft. Not real interested in working the ball. Forgiveness important, feel somewhat important.

If you are seeking forgiveness with great feel you have the winner in your bag.....as a 12 handicap those should be perfection, even as your handicap drops.....

Perhaps you should have them fitted...the forged Mizunos are very easy to bend if needed...

You could pick up another set with graphite shafts on ebay pretty inexpensive.....if that is what you are after vs reshafting the ones you have....

That being said I just love the Mizuno forged feel so IMHO of course....

I have a set of MX 20's, mp 33's and mp 60's all s300 and a 5 and 6 iron mx 23 with the blue mizzy graph shaft which is nice, very light just not for me yet but I could adapt to them.

+1 MX-23. I'm lefty as well and have the same set with the same shaft.

I owned MX23's - twice. Great irons, but I feel they are a bit over rated when it comes to forgiving less-than-perfect contact. I went from the MX-23's to S-58's, and experienced no real difference (perhaps a testament to the Pings more than a dig at the Mizzunos).

Of those you have listed, I'd look hard at the AP-1's, and the Burners second.

Don't overlook i5's and i15's. Rapture J's are an option as well.

Have you considered Callaway X series, Fusions, or Cleveland CG7's?

I'd go with the Ping G15 irons. They are fantasically forgiving and have great feel (to a point).
They are THE bomb for 2010.

Agree but IMHO a 12 cap should hit those real solid.

Maybe not a 20 cap (although I think they'll do fine with em)...but a 12 having problems with those it's gotta be the shaft or the fit.

Then again, lotsa times a change is good!

You should see my basement, the HH budget cop is starting to whine about too much stuff.

Gotta go on the sell mode on ebay again.

The MX-25s are more forgiving in the long irons.

Another MX 23 player here. I'm not sure any of the irons you listed are an improvement. They're all fine, but the only reason for a change I see is if you want something different.

The irons you have are super. Consider a total weight difference but the iron head you have is a winner for almost anybody.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I think everyone from time to time has a little bit of "ho" when it comes to purchasing new clubs. I'm thinking I'll stick with what I have.

There's other ways to Ho! Buy a second set of MX-23s as backup. Try different shafts in them and compare to your originals.
I have to get mine ready for play this year. Didn't get around to it last winter.

Thats actually a great idea. From the several responses to my original post I get the impression there is nothing out there today that is better than the 23's. Thanks,

Good choice I been playing the 23's probably 6 years after a fitting with Dana. Still great irons but since the fitting I've had back surgery and other ailments that father time does to you. So from time to time I have thoughts about going to other more forgiving irons as well since I also don't play as much as I did. But money and time is are an issue for me and I 'll continue with the 23s for now. May try a different shaft however been playing the s300 might be time to try something else.

Fwiw, I've had mine mothballed for several years. Every so often I take them out for a "last round" with the plan of letting them go and inevitably I hit them so well they buy some more time in the club room.

Have you considered having the S300s soft stepped?

I have several sets, but go back and forth between I5s and LT2s for tournaments. The soil around here is quite rocky and I prefer the durability of cast heads over forged. I also never cared for the PW in the 23s. It looks big and awkward to my eye. It was also short. The center of gravity seemed too low and I balloon shots at the short end of the bag. Sets that came after the 23s, including the 25s and 200s had more forgiving long irons. The new MX-300s have more of a compact look and enhanced playability in the short irons.

The i5s have CS Lite S and std. length & lie. They were fitted, I'm the hypothetical OEM average golfer. The LT2s have stock graphite stiff shafts and std. length and lie.

I recently went through Mizuno's iron shaft fitting and was recommended to go with Dynalite XP S300s soft stepped once, Nippon 950 S or KBS Tour S soft stepped once.
