Full Version: Colored balls coming from Cleveland/Srixon

heard on a local radio golf show yesterday as they were talking to the cleveland/srixon rep that you can expect to see yellowish balls coming to the tour and the public, perhaps as early as seeing some pros next week. same balls but with different color. reason being that the color is easier to see, especially on tv and that studies have shown the yellowish/green tint has a mellowing, tranquil effect. balls may show up in stores by april.

how many will start playing quality colored balls?

I saw one of the Euro players was playing a yellow ball this week. (or was it last week?) I don't rememeber who it was, Jaidee?

I didn't really like it, it would have been a distraction to me.

as gawdy as some calim them to be...I would...but I will not play a rock, just becuase it's colored.

Some can say where's the tradition? Let me tell you...when your playing twilight golf. Having even a few rock colored 2 peice balls make the last few holes possible.

Some of us remember when some pros were playing colored balls. Jerry Pate's commercial at the ball washer, "Who took my orange ball?"

There is a reason that colored balls, yellow, orange, mixed colors, did not stick around the first time.

I'd play them as well. They are easier to see in the sky and on the ground. win-win in my book. i guess the only pro style ball that was colored recently could be the pink ones used by Paula Creamer.

when wilson released the Orange OPTIC balls. The color was very good, but they like others changed the process. I'm thinking cart-path rash had an effect on it and the color changed from a paint to the surlyn. The colored balls where never the same after they made that switch. Hence why it died (IMHO).

Photo attached, a few of my NOS, un-hit premium colored balls, probably from the 1980s.

The Hogan is the Apex S 90+ and the two Ram balls are Pro Tour and Pro Tour TD. The premium colored balls obviously didn't catch on back then.

There is a ball company in Australia that seems to be going in the opposite direction, making blue-white high-visibility balls, if I recall correctly.

Personally I like really bright white golf balls.

The reason for the viewpoint in the past is that they simply painted an average ball with a different color. I think the colored balls have a bad image from the past.

If titleist had a pro V1 ball in orange, how many people would play it. I would even bet people would say bad things about the ball without realizing it is a Pro v1.

Those Australian balls are the ones sold by our sponsor, SMT Golf.
They are on p 35-36 of their online catalog.

Didn't Ishikawa have a yellow one? Whoever, it looked good on TV.

For me, the easiest ball to find (I play a lot in the fall, with leaves a factor) is a pure white ball, the whiter the better.

The glare off glistening leaves makes it a tough find, and yes, leaves do appear in the fairways.

In the summer, I don't mind yellow or orange, but they are still not as easy to find if rough is involved.

And those aren'tt only better for twilight golf. A colored ball is easier to see when it's laying on beige/gray dormant grass, also.

optic yellow is one of the easiest colors to pick up in most surroundings. wimbledon went from white to yellow ball years ago for that reason and we all know they know something or two about tradition -)

I'm 59 and my eyesight isn't what it used to be and on top of that I have a condition that causes glare to make it worse. i just tried some cheap yellow balls and found I could see them in the air much easier. i also could find them on teh ground easier also. Bring em on!

Denver Bronco fans would play orange balls.

Edit: Just read the post where Mike gave you the link.
Vision golf is the company from Austrailia. They make some really cool looking balls that perform really well. The covers of the white ones are my favorite, Arctic White in particular.
They kid of look like the Maxfli Noodle Ice, but better. The yellow balls that Vision makes are UV coated. Vision has new ball models coming out this year. I got in on the test program. I still have some of the new balls left over for testing.

I have two of them. One is purple/white the other is orange/yellow. I don't know if they are legal for play. Weren't they supposed to be just training aids?

I won't buy any. Way back in the day I played a few dozen of those orange "Jerry Pate" type but never really embraced them.

Another short lived cyclical fad I'd say.

Actually, they stuck around forever. They were VERY popular for about 10 years and they never completely went away.
