once you are there, is there anything you can do or say to get kicked out?

I really don't have time for this

Yeah, there are lots of things you can say or do.

It doesn't take much imagination to figure it out. Act crazy, appear as if you've made your mind up before the case begins, tell everyone there you have no time for it....but.....I know you don't want to hear this-- give jury duty a shot.

Our courts need good people like you. Don't let important decisions be made by someone who doesn't have your knowledge, experience and wisdom. We have the best legal system in the world but it all depends on our citizens making the choice to serve. If you don't have time to do it now, most courts will allow you to reasonably postpone your service if you need to.

With all respect to you, I know you can get out of it if you want. Just think what we all will miss without you.

I will second the thoughts of the first reply. The system needs quality jurors to work. Suppose you were one of the litigants, who would you want to hear your case.

Legitimate time concerns will be carefully considered. Otherwise, we all have the same 24 hours.

This reminds me of something I was told by a guy I used to work with, now retired. I'm sure it's a repeat, but here goes anyway.

A general is approaching retirement. In his last week, he's given duty heading up a court martial tribunal, the last thing he wants for his last week. He enters the room, sits down and says, "All right, bring the guilty ba$tard in."

Was excused and there you go. :)

I am in the process of merging my company, and there is so much going on tomorrow which is normally slow

I'll see what I can do to make a quick exit.

I apologize - but that's a #### poor reason to want to be exempted from your civic duty.

Notwithstanding my personal feelings about you - each summons should provide several legitimate exemptions - and if you qualify you don't have to go. So read your summons and see if you qualify.

But if you don't - IMO lying about it is wrong.

Jury duty has been said to be the second most important civic duty. second only to military service.

I understand sandmangator's concern.

Sometimes the jury summons comes at the wrong time. I know a little about the process. My suggestion: Go early and tell the judge or jury commisioner about your problem. It appears to me to be a legitimate issue. Be straight about it. This kind of thing happens all the time.

Ask to be re-scheduled. The judge will appreciate your candor. You'll feel better about it, too.

Hence my suggestion to try to get a legitimate exemption.

He infers that he wants to lie.

That's wrong. But I'm a lawyer, former SA US Attorney, and have sat on several juries. It IS an inconvenience...but necessary. As for business mergers - I run my own business; and as an attorney I have merged or sold businesses for myself and for clients before.

If jury duty is a deal killer for the merger - then it's a tenuous merger.

But if the exemption is obtained legitimately I think that's ok. I bristle at the attempt to game the system.

Make time.

We need good smart people passing out sentences. Seems like everyone wants to get out of jury duty.. Starting to think depending on the case I'd forego a jury trial and just let the judge sentence me if I was in trouble

Back to the question you may can get a wavier to do it at a later date if you have a legit reason.

You can also mention you believe in jury nullification.
Be like Uncle Ruckus and say that *slur* is guilty.
Mention you know someone who had a similar incident and you cant be fair

Hey Bogey, I'm with you. I think we're saying the same thing. We just say it differently. Like you, I sure don't want him to lie. I don't think anyone is suggesting he does so. That would be wrong. But I think it's important to acknowledge that jury duty comes a difficult times for some folks. That said, I know if he has a chance to serve, he will find it a very rewarding experience.

I had it when I was in college and ended up getting out of it. One misconception, if you are selected for a jury and say something crazy you get kicked out. Partially true, you get kicked off that certain trial and back into the jury room pool for future trials.

I simply leveled with the guy incharge of the jury pool. I was a student, had two summer jobs and a few classes - I told him I honestly could not afford to be there and he said if my name wasnt called by the end of the first day I could go home - thankfully it worked out.

The last time that I was on "the list" for jury duty it fell at a time that I could not possibly serve. Work wise it would have been a fiasco (I was working for a very small company and nobody else could cross-train my job). My boss (the President of the company) wrote a note to the commisioner of jurors asking that my jury duty be delayed. I told him that I would be available in two months... and low and behold they actually delayed my term by two months.

If you have a time that is a better fit for you, you might just try honesty.
But expect to be recalled at the time promised. It only works once!

Do what Swingthe7 said. It sounds like you have a critical project and can get rescheduled. In some states, self employed can get out of it.

Where I live there are not many ways to get out of it other than a serious illness or knowing the party going to trial.
I agree we need good jurors.

Do what my wife did...just don't show up. She truly forgot. Not sure why the deputy's never came to our house.

I always thought about this, but never brought it up before. We have some very intelligent people not working these days. I should sat a lot of intelligent people not working these days. Maybe they should be using the unemployed for jurors. I'm not saying the drug addicts on the street, because they wouldn't give a fair ruling, but others would work. I know you can't get fired for going to Jury Duty, but in a small business, you might very well fall out of favor with the higher ups.
