I was no fan of John Murtha. IMHO, he was a poster child of everything that's wrong with our system of government. But I work in a hospital and it pains me to read that he died from a medical error. Doctors at the esteemed Bethesda Naval Medical Center botched a simple laparoscopic gall bladder removal. Just goes to show there's no such thing as routine surgery. Sad.

I think it's safe to say that a major lawsuit is in the works.
Can a military hospital get sued and have to pay up just like any civilian hospital, or are they protected under some special provision, immune to medical malpractice liabilities?

Sad indeed, whether you liked his brand of politics or not. I had a friend of about the same age go in for heart surgery and he told me not to worry about it as it was fairly routine. He didn't make it and was dead the next week. So, I understand all too well this kind of situation. -cw_golf
